Govt keeping coy over contents of Budget

UPDATED 8.37am The Government is keeping its powder conspicuously dry when it comes to suggestions announcements on paid parental leave may feature in this week's Budget.

Extensions to entitlements were a feature of last year's Budget, and with an Opposition Bill on the matter before the House there's speculation fresh developments may be pending.

Health, education, and housing are all seen as hot button political issues.

But John Key doesn't want to give away which one will get the biggest slice of the pie.

"The Government has looked at a range of different areas and determined there was need in certain places. It's looking to address those. Like every budget you can never scratch every itch."

Key said they're already doing plenty to solve the housing crisis.

"Really, ultimately whether it's special housing or the work we've been doing in relation to the bright line tests and tax change duties, there's just a range of different things we've been doing."

Workplace Relations Minister Michael Woodhouse thinks the current balance on paid parental leave is about right, but he won't be drawn as to if announcements will be made in Thursday's Budget.

"You'll hear more about Thursday's Budget on Thursday," he said,

And Finance Minister Bill English is as equally coy.

"I'm not going to speculate, you'll have to wait and see. The Budget's on Thursday."
