As the Indian student deportation saga drags on, the government has denied that it's punishing vulnerable people.

Around 40 students have been caught in a fraudulent visa scam, paying thousands to a dodgy outfit in India, and are now facing deportation from the country.

The students said they had no idea fake documents were used by India-based agents, and claim deporting them for something they haven't done is unfair.

There was another demonstration last night in Auckland over the looming deportations, calling on Deputy Prime Minister Bill English and National MP Dr Parmjeet Parma to go in to bat for them in parliament.

The protesters are arguing that even government MPs of Indian heritage have been conspicuously silent.

Anu Kaloti, from the Migrant Workers Association, says despite the snub, their presence was felt, and they hope a meeting with Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse may happen in the coming days.

But tertiary education minister Steven Joyce told Larry Williams this morning there are other problems, including a flurry of providers behaving badly, and the matter's in the hands of immigration officials.

"It's not just about visas," he said. "Some of them have been in a situation of criminal activity while they're in New Zealand."

"There'll be more to come yet. There's work going on with a few more [providers]. They'll either be resolved in terms of them pulling up their socks of a few of them will go out of business."
