CYFs in spotlight for overhaul debate

Fears the promised overhaul for Child Youth and Family will only be a cost-cutting exercise.

An independent panel's been appointed for a major review, with all aspects of CYF being scrutinised.

Greens co-leader Metiria Turei agrees the department needs a review, but not to ensure the books are balanced.

"The history of government reviews such as ACC and WINZ, has shown they will move money out of these services, away from the vulnerable kids who need it."

She says protecting vulnerable children will never be a profit-making exercise.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has given cautious backing for an overhaul of Child Youth and Family.

He says it's a good idea, as long as they have the right priorities.

"There have been some pretty serious examples of its failings but I think they also lack the support and firepower to do the job properly."
