'Cyberbullying' Bill set to pass

Controversial anti-cyberbullying legislation is set to be passed into law this week.

OPINION: In search of a First Amendment

MPs will tomorrow debate, and pass, the government's Harmful Digital Communications Bill.

It sets up a civil enforcement regime to handle hateful online abuse, as well as create a new criminal offence for what are deemed as seriously harmful online behaviours, such as incitement to suicide.

However the legislation's faced criticism for going too far.

Some critics say it effectively negates digital freedom of speech, while others have called it out for being a well intentioned law, but one that's likely to have significant unintended consequences.

All parties bar ACT are supporting the legislation.
