The Greens are calling for a fair price for people putting solar power onto the national grid - launching a petition at Parliament this afternoon.
Meridian recently slashed its buyback price from 25 to 7 cents per kilowatt hour, while Contact cut its rate from 17 cents down to 8 cents.
Green MP Gareth Hughes says an independent umpire should set the price.
"Thousands of Kiwis are looking at going solar," he says.
"There's huge uncertainty in the market for these households investors, when the power companies can and do change the terms and the rates with only thirty days notice."
