Behaviour raised ahead of Labour leadership contest

UPDATED 3.22pm: Labour MPs and members are being reminded of behaviour rules as the party heads into its leadership contest.

A code of conduct for candidates will be finalised once the nominations process closes on the October 14, ahead of a five week primary process

Labour Party General Secretary Tim Barnett says they have rules governing behaviour and bringing the party into disrepute and are reminding people of their obligations.

"And obviously in this election it does look as though early on there's a bit more rah-rah than we had the last time, so we're just timing things accordingly."

Barnett says interim information from the review of the election result will be available in about a month.

And he indicates it will go to party members as they consider their vote in the leadership primary.

"Well if it's intended that it informs voters of the process then obviously party members are voters, so we would need to make sure in some way it got to them."

Barnett: No immediate changes needed to selection process

A senior Labour Party official doesn't expect the party to make any immediate changes to the way it selects its parliamentary leader

Labour's ability to find general support for one leadership candidate across caucus, members, and union affiliates is being seen as a major challenge in its current leadership race.

But Party General Secretary Tim Barnett remains comfortable with the current arrangement as it "allows everyone to have a say".

"Can it be refined and changed?

"Absolutely.

"I thin we've got the balance right for the time being so I don't think there's any strong pressure for that to change."

No change of heart for Parker

Labour's interim leader is definitely having no second thoughts about any aspirations he may have had to make the job permanent.

David Parker had initially been speculated on as a potential candidate for the leadership race but ruled himself out.

With only David Cunliffe and Grant Robertson confirmed contenders for the job, some MPs have been looking for a third option.

But Mr Parker is making it clear he's not after the top job.
