UPDATED 2.13pm: National backbencher Todd Barclay is near the top of the list of MPs with the highest travel and accommodation expenses.

The Clutha Southland MP's racked up a bill of $45,000 over the last three months.

It's $12,000 more than he spent in the same period last year.

That puts him ahead of other rural MPs, such as Labour MPs Damien O'Connor and Kelvin Davis, who each have bills of about $35,000.

The largely rural seat of Clutha-Southland is the largest general electorate in the country.

Mr Barclay's expenses are even more than New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, who has clocked up just over $42,000, despite Mr Peters having a large electorate in Northland.

Mr Barclay said this quarter's expenses include five months worth of mileage - some carried over from the beginning of the year- which was not initially claimed for.

"That's almost 12,000kms worth of travel, which I've been reimbursed for the expenses of in this quarter, which should have been in the last quarter."

However, he falls short of Labour leader Andrew Little's $56,000 travel and accommodation bill.

In total MPs incurred just shy of $2.3 million in travel and accommodation expenses between April and June.

That compares to a $1.4 million sum for the first three months of the year - though that period includes part of Parliament's summer recess.

Among parties, National MPs, not including Government ministers, spent $859,555 between them.

$759,817 was spent by 32 Labour MPs, and 14 Green MPs spent $313,207. 11 New Zealand First MPs spent $287,121.
