Auckland's roads 'as dangerous as ever'

A Mt Albert by-election candidate whose friend died in a motorbike accident in Auckland says the city's roads are as dangerous as ever.

Joe Carolan's friend Piripi Thompson was fatally struck by a car in Grey Lynn in 2005.

He says since then, roads have become more congested, and more dangerous for cyclists and motorcyclists alike.

"I'm terrified what's going to happen to my kids when I see them on their scooter, their skateboard, their bike."

Mr Carolan says motorists shouldn't be punished with tolls, but should be given more alternatives like reliable public transport.

The Greens' Mt Albert candidate said Auckland's new Waterview Connection has failed motorists before it's even opened.

The final stage of the South-Western Motorway opens in April, connecting the North-Western Motorway, the airport and the Southern Motorway.

Newstalk ZB has confirmed ramp signals will be used to control traffic at the new intersection during busy period.

Motorists could be stopped with ramp signals on the on-ramps into the Waterview tunnel and the eastbound ramp out of it.

NZTA says the Waterview connection will reduce journey times, and ramp signals are used around the world to control traffic flows.

But Green candidate Julie Anne Genter claims the motorway will create more traffic problems than it will solve.

"It's not going to provide the congestion reduction benefits which the project was touted to have in the first place," she said.

"The actual implementation and design is a bit of a catastrophe."

Meanwhile, Gareth Morgan's Mt Albert candidate admits he's definitely the more "right wing" option in Saturday's by-election.

Opportunity Party candidate Geoff Simmons was heckled, confronted and shouted down by left-wing activists at a public debate last night.

He said the party is open to going into government with National after September's election, and not everyone will like that.

"There is a lot of anti-National Government sentiment, but looking back over the history of Labour, there is a lot of shortcomings with what they've done."

Mr Simmons said the party is equally open to working with Labour, and offers an alternative to both major parties.
