The APEC summit has wrapped up in Vietnam with the Prime Minister saying little more than hello to Donald Trump.

But Jacinda Ardern said from New Zealand's perspective the summit has been a great success.

She said there's reason to feel a new sense of security, given the heavy hitters who were there.

"To have Japan, United States, China all sitting around a table, particularly as we face the challenges with North Korea, that in itself was incredibly important."

It marked Ardern's first big international trip, which will continue with the East Asian Economic summit in Manila over the next few days.

Newstalk ZB political editor Barry Soper is travelling with the Prime Minister, and said that she showed no intimidation when meeting the high players.

"Her friendly, outgoing nature seemed to impress those she came into contact with. When she was centre stage at the Business Leaders Summit and at APEC itself, she appeared confident and self assured."

The trip was also a successful one for Foreign Minister Winston Peters.

The Deputy Prime Minister shared a dinner table with several power brokers in Vietnam last night, including Russia's Foreign Minister and sharing the table with the American Secretary of State.

He says the discussions were fruitful and they got along well.

"I get along with everybody fine," Peters said.

"I was sitting next to Sergei Lavrov and [Rex] Tillerson so that was very advantageous and I was fostering our best relationships into the future."
