UPDATED 8.40am: Today's Premier Yearling Sales at Karaka will be hoping to build on the momentum of last night's Karaka Million at Ellerslie.

Hundreds of finely-bred one-year-olds are sold at the sales every year.

Auckland Racing Club chief executive Cameron George told Newstalk ZB's Jack Tame last night's winner shows the returns that can be made.

"There's a house that sold for $3000 two years ago at the sales and won a $100,00 race yesterday."

Brisbane trainer Liam Birchley won the million dollar race with the Australian-trained Hardline.

Lot 102 may not be the biggest seller on the opening day of the Premier Yearling Sale at Karaka, but it will be an historic moment nonetheless.

The colt out of Organdy from Cambridge Stud's draft being sold today, will be the last yearling to go through the ring by Zabeel.

He's been the dominant sire in New Zealand through the late 1990s and 2000s.

Cambridge Stud's Sir Patrick Hogan ended Zabeel's active duties in late 2013 after he had difficulty getting any mares in foal.

Zabeel sired 44 group one winners, won two Australian sires' titles, three New Zealand sires' titles and the Dewar Trophy for Australasian earnings for a NZ-based sire 15 times.

He also provided numerous highlights at the Karaka sale ring, including the sale of a subsequent Australian Derby winner Don Eduardo for a then-Australasian record price of $3.6 million.

Sales manager Danny Rolston says Zabeel retired to stud in 1991, and has become one of the most successful champion studs.

"He's had such a strong impact on our industry and in a roundabout way, everyone's benefited from that - right down to the local economy."

Since retiring to stud, Zabeel has sired well over 100 individual stakeswinners.
