Drowning is the second highest cause of death for New Zealander's younger than 24 years old.
A survey conducted by Water Safety New Zealand has found over a third of New Zealander's have experienced a dangerous situation in the water.
WSNZ Ceo Jonty Mills says the survey shows the messages are getting through to people, but it's not resulting in changes or behaviours towards water safety.
"Drowning fatalities are unfortunately the number one cause of recreation death and about 30% of all New Zealanders have had a near miss or very close call with a drowning. It certainly shows people are aware of the dangers."
