The broadband 'Hunger Games' have come to an end - and a southern city's the victor.

Dunedin has won the Gigatown competition, giving the city access to the fastest internet in the country.

It's won after a year-long social media competition.

Snap Internet general manager James Koers says hard work of the losing finalists - Gisborne, Nelson, Timaru and Wanaka - won't be wasted.

"They've got their strategies in place and they've got all this community engagement and council engagement and that sort of thing. There's no reason why they can't achieve an awful lot of their connected strategies that they've been working on."

Mr Koers says it's now important Chorus rolls out gigabit fibre across the country.

"It gets really complex for us when we have different providers having different inputs that operate differently and cost different amounts. A nationally consistent service, that's really important to us."

Gigabit fibre is already available in North Island areas served by Ultra Fast Fibre.
