Wild weather batters South Island

Wind currently attacking the South Island's expected to continue for the next few hours.

In some areas in Canterbury the wind's reached almost 160-kilometres an hour.

Electricity's off for almost 1000 properties around Timaru, Hoon Hay, Dunsandel, Rolleston and West Melton.

Weather commentator Richard Green said there's much more to come tonight.

He said some very strong winds are expected, and that people should flip outside objects like trampolines on their backs so they don't become "missiles."

Power's out in Dunedin tonight as severe weather battles the region.

The city's been pounded by thunder, lightening and hail.

Aurora Energy has been working through the day to restore power, but says around 200 homes are still waiting to be reconnected.

The wild weather's also giving Queenstown travellers a headache as flights are disrupted.

Some flights in and out of Queenstown Airport are delayed or cancelled as strong winds and rain batter the area.

In Canterbury police are warning motorists on all roads to be careful of the strong gusts, expected to reach 160-kilometres an hour.
