Whitebait patties could be in jeopardy as the majority of New Zealand's native freshwater fish are facing extinction.

Canterbury University researcher Dr Simon Howard has investigated two fish species - including Whitebait - in the Waitaki River.

He found their survival is threatened by changing river flows and climate change, as the fish need specific conditions to survive.

Dr Howard says more research is needed to find a way to protect these endangered fish.
