Wellington's first Pride Parade since the 90's will be hitting the streets this morning.

At 11 o'clock organisers are expecting about 1500 people to join the parade as part of the Wellington Pride Festival.

Chair Adrienne Girling said the parade will run from Cambridge Terrace down Courtenay Place and over to Taranaki Street before finishing at the waterfront.

She said the support for the parade means a lot.

"We're not always that visible and so it's just this really great opportunity to showcase that community to the city, and the country, and invite other people to join us."

Ms Girling said in the evening a ball will be held.

"[We] also encourage young people to come out and be who they want, dress how they want and bring any partner that they want, which isn't always possible in schools."

The parade starts on Cambridge Terrace at 10.45am and has a theme of "A World of Fantasy".
