Updated 2:36pm: Wellington Coroner Ian Smith has died.
Chief Coroner Judge Neil MacLean says he was a warm-hearted, articulate and generous man.
He says Ian Smith was highly respected among his fellow Coroners and passionate about his role.
Mr Smith was appointed as Coroner for the Wellington region in 2007.
