Architect Sir Ian Athfield's son says he was a man who connected with many people over his long career.
Over 400 people filled Wellington's City Gallery yesterday, in a public celebration of the architect's life.
Zac Athfield says the number reflects he was loved by a lot of people - but his father wouldn't have cared if four people turned up.
He says Sir Ian was a man who wanted to connect with people, but on an individual level.
"I think the buildings and the work that he's done over 50 years plus generally has been quite good at attracting people who appreciate what he was trying to do."
