A petition asking Environment Canterbury to revoke a water bottling consent is closing on its target of 35,000 signatures in just three days.

Cloud Ocean Water's site in Belfast is owned by the Chinese Ling Hai Group.

WorkSafe and the Christchurch City Council have been investigating complaints about safety at the construction site, where eight notices were issued.

WorkSafe said the eight improvement and prohibition notices at the planet relate to falls from heights, electrical safety and the wider workplace environment.

It says it continuing to monitor the site and ensure compliance.

The City Council's also investigated allegations construction workers were sleeping on site. The council said its found no proof of this, but its still investigating whether the Resource Management Act and the Building Act have been breached.

The contract was only awarded to the Belfast site earlier this year.

The announced sparked controversy and continued the debate around putting a price on New Zealand's water after it was revealed the consent would allow for 1.5 billion litres of water to be taken from Christchurch aquafiers.

The plant is the second largest in the country.
