Police fear fake bank notes circulating around the North Island will slip through retailers' hands over a busy Easter trading weekend.

They've received reports of counterfeits being passed, particularly in Wellington.

Senior Sergeant Bud Butler of the Wellington District Command Centre says 20, 50 and 100 dollar denominations are being used, and shop keepers should be alert.

"They should contact the police or for further information go to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's website, on how to spot counterfeit notes."

"With Easter coming up, a lot of us go out and do plenty of shopping. Customers and retailers need to keep an eye out for counterfeit notes."

The offenders buy a small item using a large note and then get legitimate cash as change.
