Warning against election day social media posts

People are being warned to be careful about what they post on social media today.

2,400 polling booths will be open around the country between 9am and 7pm.

Electoral Commission spokeswoman Anastasia Turnbull said on election day there's a ban on posting or sharing something that could influence which party or candidate a person might want to vote for.

However, she said it's fine to remind people to get out to vote or to let people know you've just voted.

"Care should be taken not to post anything that says who you voted for or shows your voting paper," Ms Turnbull said.

Meanwhile, clear skies and a dry day has Mother Nature co-operating with people getting out to vote on election day.

Most of the country will see fine weather this morning with only a few nuisance showers intermittently in the afternoon for Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington.

Christchurch has the best of the lot with temperatures around 20 degrees while Tasman and Nelson miss the showers.

Southland have drawn the short straw with showers throughout the morning but NIWA meteorologist Seth Carrier says that will be the worst hit region.

Mr Carrier said that, overall, most locations will be almost entirely dry with moderate temperatures.
