The names of the two people who died in a car that crashed while fleeing police in Auckland in the early hours of Monday morning have been named.

They were Connor Talaimanu, 29, and Sharina Storm Meuli, 25, who were both from Auckland.

The car, carrying five people, crashed into a tree while overtaking on St Lukes Road, a little after 1am on Monday.

Police say the victims were rear seat passengers.

Police had begun chasing the speeding car on the Northwestern Motorway after it had been seen travelling about 130km/h in an 80km/h zone.

The vehicle did not pull over and fled from police before leaving the motorway and crashing.

The investigation into the accident remains ongoing.

It is the second police pursuit to end in death in two weeks, after 15-year-old Morrocco Tai died in a crash in South Auckland.
