eighth Fruit Fly found

Updated 3.35pm: An eighth fruit fly has been found in Grey Lynn in Auckland.

The Ministry for Primary Industries has announced the find of the male fly at a media briefing in Wellington.

MPI suspects it knows why there are more frequent Queensland fruit fly scares.

The current scare is the fourth discovery of the fly in New Zealand since 2009, when 100-percent x-ray screening of bags at borders was stopped.

Ministry for Primary Industries Chief Operating Officer Andrew Coleman says the x-ray screening is not a full proof system, and its unlikely its the main cause.

"The flies are becoming more prevalent, we think, because of the burgeoning fruit fly population in North Australia."

There should be no doubt what items fans can take away from tomorrow's Cricket World Cup match - as the Ministry for Primary Industries tries to keep on top of the Auckland fruit fly scare.

Eden Park is within the fruit fly containment zone.

The ministry will deploy an extra 40 staff to the game to help spectators be aware of the restrictions in place.

This comes after the discovery of an eighth fruit fly in Grey Lynn.

MPI Chief Operating Officer Andrew Coleman says it will be hard for fans to ignore what they can and can't do with their food.

"We think that if you are attending the game you'll either walk past an officer, be handed a pamphlet or hear the messaging that you are inside a restricted zone."
