Updated 7.13pm: Wild weather across the country has caused delays to a number of flights today.

Weather conditions delayed some Air New Zealand services in and out of Christchurch, Invercargill, Queenstown, Dunedin, Wellington and Hamilton.

Snow showers are heading northward from the bitterly cold lower South Island.

Rain is expected to turn to snow above about 500 metres from the Central Plateau and Hawke's Bay southwards overnight, then snow should gradually lower to about 300 metres.

The heaviest snow is expected in the regions overnight tonight and tomorrow morning.

Cold showery southerlies should then persist for the rest of the week, bringing periods of snow to about 300 to 400 metres in the east from Wellington to Gisborne and about the central high country.

This morning an Air New Zealand flight from Christchurch to Invercargill was diverted to Dunedin because of ice on the runway.

The return service going the other way was then also cancelled as a result.

An Air New Zealand spokeswoman says the airline will continue to monitor the weather and re-assess the situation as the day progresses.

Emergency Management Southland is warning people from travelling tomorrow morning before road conditions are known.

MetService is forecasting further snowfall tonight.

Roads are expected to become even more treacherous.

Senior sergeant Terry Bruce said they're expecting more black ice and frozen snow tomorrow morning.
