Trans-Tasman sporting rivalry is missing out on tens of millions of dollars from fans reluctant to cross the ditch because of airport red tape and taxes.
That's the finding of a survey done in both countries that shows that one-third of trans-Tasman travel is by those attending a major event, with the majority watching a sporting fixture..
Tourism Industry Association chief executive Chris Roberts says Aussie fans say they are frustrated at the time it takes to clear New Zealand airports, while the kiwis say the 55 dollar Australian departure tax is a shocker.
"That's one of the most onerous taxes on travel in the world. It's certainly a major deterrent to travel across the Tasman. For a family of four you're talking about an extra $200 dollars added to the trip."
Chris Roberts says that's a loss of millions of dollars to the economy.
He says two thirds of the New Zealanders and Australians surveyed said if they could have a quicker passage through the airport when travelling across the Tasman they would be more likely to travel.
