Australia and New Zealand could take a joint response when it comes to dealing with the threat posed by Ebola.

The disease will be a topic of conversation when John Key meets Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott in Perth tonight.

Mr Key says the two countries could coordinate their responses in terms of providing medical assistance to affected countries..

He says it's an area both countries are looking at.

"Ebola has the potential to become a very serious issue and if it does that has significantly implications for New Zealand and so globally people working to combat it is not a bad idea."
