Police across New Zealand and Australia are joining forces to target dangerous driving this holiday season.

The 'Fatal Five' operation starts today and runs through until January 3.

It focuses on drink and drug driving, speeding, fatigue, distraction and seatbelts.

Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency CEO Jon White says police will be out in force to emphasise that risky driving is not only socially and morally unacceptable, but also carries serious consequences.

Road accidents claimed 254 lives in New Zealand last year and the lives of nearly 1200 Australians.
