Traffic congestion due to get worse

Reset your alarm clocks and leave for work a bit earlier next week, because March madness is back again.

Traffic usually peaks from the late February to mid April every year, as students return to university, schools are in term and fewer people are on leave.

AA spokesman Barney Irvine said people also need to allow extra time for trips and avoid travelling at peak times if they can.

"Be prepared to be flexible. Don't make this the week you set an appointment on the other side of town that you absolutely have to get to."

Mr Irvine said Auckland's transport problems won't be solved until people change their travel times and behaviours.

Auckland Transport is putting on extra and bigger buses, including 56 more city-bound bus trips each morning compared to last March.

Metro Operations manager Brendon Main said they have focused on routes which had full or crowded buses last year.

The overall capacity of bus services will increase by 5% on Monday, creating an extra 5600 spaces.

Train timetable changes being introduced on March 12 will also add 796 extra spaces on the Eastern Line and 398 extra spaces on the Southern.

“We know the number of public transport passengers peaks in March. Since March last year we’ve worked hard to get more services on some of our busiest routes.

“We will have more than six and a half thousand extra spaces on buses and trains, this will go a long way towards meeting demand.”

Transport Blog editor Matt Lowrie said Auckland Transport's proactive approach is commendable.

He said it was important people have positive public transport services in March, because that's often when they set habits for the rest of the year.

But he said other solutions are also needed to prevent everyone travelling on the same routes at the same times every day.

"We could look at school times, and when they start and finish.

"We could look at off-peak discounts, giving people a cheaper fare if they travel slightly later in the morning."
