UPDATED 4.32pm: A tourist driver whose father died in a Canterbury crash was heading to the airport to fly home.

Chia-Fang Chu crashed into a another car at an intersection in Templeton two weeks ago, after she failed to stop at a stop sign.

Her father Fu-Hwa Ju died at the scene and her mother Mei-Yu Chu Yeh remains in hospital.

The 39-year–old pleaded guilty to charges of careless driving causing death and careless driving causing injury in the Christchurch District Court today.

The defence told Judge Couch his client had stopped at railway lines just before the intersection, but failed to see the stop sign and ran through it.

He told the court Chia-Fang Chu's father had insisted on the trip as she was suffering from depression since her partner had been killed in a motorbike accident.

He said the crash was an accident and could have happened to any nationality of driver.

She'll be sentenced on Friday.
