Winter tourism spending in Christchurch and North Canterbury is on the up this year, according to the latest statistics.

The monthly breakdown of homegrown and international visitors from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, show that spending in the city was up nine percent in July compared to the same time last year.

Visitors also spent five percent more up to the end of July than during the same period in 2015.

In North Canterbury visitors spent six percent more this July than than in 2015, while visitor dollars contributed eight percent more up to the end of July than at the same time last year.

Meanwhile walkers and cyclists on a popular Port Hills walking and cycling track are set for a revamped piece of history reopening later this year.

The Sign of the Kiwi was a popular rest house on the Summit Road track, before it was damaged in the 2011 earthquake.

Since March, the building has undergone major strengthening and renovation.

Christchurch City councillor Andrew Turner, who's been working on the project says once the building reopens at the end of the year, said it'll be a great addition to the area.
