The idea of buying a pair of slippers and sitting back with the paper in our golden years, is out of date.

Today's Herald on Sunday says the concept of retiring from work at 65 is no longer true for many New Zealanders.

Even though they're on super, the paper says around 140,000 people over 65 are still going to work.

Only one person in five who's working today expects to retire altogether.

Since compulsory retirement was banned by the Human Rights Act the number of older workers has trebled from 9 per cent of men, to 27 per cent.

For women, the likelihood of being in paid work past the age of 65 is 17 per cent.

And almost 20 percent of people can expect to be working in their early 70s.
