UPDATED 7.12pm: Teina Pora has broken his silence about being locked up wrongfully for more than two decades.

Pora was convicted of the rape and murder of Susan Burdett, and served more than 21 years in prison, before the Privy Council quashed his conviction in March.

The charges were laid after he was interviewed for four days.

Two juries judged him guilty before the Privy Council ruled that: "The combination of Pora's frequently contradictory and often implausible confessions and the recent diagnosis of his FASD [fetal alcohol syndrome disorder] leads to only one possible conclusion and that is that the reliance on his confessions gives rise to a risk of a miscarriage of justice."

Since being released, he's remained silent until an interview which has been aired tonight.

He's told TV3's 3D other inmates accused him of being a rapist and murderer in prison, but he always maintained his innocence.

"I stood up and told him I ain't that person, I'm an innocent man of a crime that I never committed."

When asked about his confessions, Pora, who was 17 at the time, said he was young and confused.

"It was like getting interrogated ... I just said whatever they were saying. I just said 'yes' and said 'no'. I thought no was yes and yes was no back then. I just went along with it."

Pora celebrates his 40th birthday next month - a double celebration as it also marks just over a year since his release from prison.

Teina Pora says he deserves compensation, but more than that he wants an apology.
