Tauranga will soon have more help batting away the overflow from the Auckland housing crisis
Two new Special Housing Areas have been approved for the city, with room for 210 homes.
There's growing evidence that pressure in Auckland is spreading to Hamilton and Tauranga, so Housing Minister Nick Smith argues the government needs to free up land to increase the supply.
"We can get ahead of the price curve, and get the homes built before we start seeing house price inflation in a community like Bay of Plenty, of the 18 to 20% that has been seen in Auckland."
However, while Tauranga is getting help dealing with the affects of Auckland's housing crisis, Hamilton is being told it's on its own.
Nick Smith admits Hamilton is also becoming a target for those who can't afford Auckland, but he's confident they're dealing with it.
He said the Hamilton Council "has done a good job of providing access to land for subdivision."
