Taupo District Council is willing to consider helping fund an airline, in exchange for maintaining daily flights to and from Wellington.

The Council has put out a request for proposals from airlines keen to take over the Wellington to Taupo route, when Air New Zealand pulls out in April.

Lake Taupo Mayor David Trewavas says the Council would look at financial support if the community calls for it.

"We just certainly don't have money sitting around to inject into here and there, but it's a very important piece of infrastructure."
