Golden Bay residents have made preparations to cut down on traffic with the Takaka Hill Road set to reopen.
NZTA says State Highway 60, between Riwaka and Takaka, should be open to one lane today.
Essential trips are due to be made in guided convoys, after the road suffered slip damage in ex-Cyclone Gita.
Golden Bay visitors centre manager Jasmine Polglase says there's some uncertainly about the restrictions, but most people are looking forward to getting back on the road.
"For a lot of locals it will mean easier transport options in and out, for [things like] hospital appointments and also getting all our supplies in over here."
However, Polglase says locals aren't getting carried away and some have organised a ride-share group to keep car numbers down.
"We want to save our road, so I think people realise that essential traffic needs to go first:"
