The remains of a high ranking child from the Tainui iwi is set to return home, after spending over 100 years in Austria.

The mummified remains were taken to Austria by collector Andreas Reischek, who was known to collect Maori remains and taonga in the late 1800s.

The process to bring the remains home began in 2013 when Te Papa formally asked for them from Weltmuseum Wien and the Austrian Government.

The repatriation will be completed at Te Papa on Monday when the remains are formally welcomed home.
