It'll be a challenge of epic proportions as 27 young Wellington surf life guards aim to paddle across Lake Taupo.

On December 28 the lifeguards, ranging from nine to 14-years-old, are planning to undertake the 46km journey across the lake on their rescue boards.

Lyall Bay Surf Club head coach Walter Maxwell says it'll take about six hours, but they're up for the challenge.

"It just bodes well for us as a club and just generates a bit of enthusiasm for us down here when we struggle a little bit because of the colder weather and the colder water."
