Wellington police are excited about a new campaign aiming to reduce alcohol-related harm this Orientation Week.

The Check Yourself campaign has been designed by Massey University students and the Wellington City Council.

Giant mirrors are being installed at party hotspots and people are being encouraged to take photos and spread the 'check yourself' message.

Area Prevention Manager Inspector Clint Walker said safety messages delivered by peers were always a good thing.

"It's a fantastic idea because it's young people talking to young people in a language they understand."

Extra police staff would be sent to the central city across Friday and Saturday nights.

"We experience an increase in the number of patrons coming into Wellington at the start of the year, especially for Orientation," Mr Walker said.

Mayor Justin Lester said the campaign aligned with the council’s Local Alcohol Policy.

“We want to find the right balance in promoting efforts to reduce alcohol-related harm while making sure the city continues to be a vibrant and safe place, and maintain its coolest little capital reputation,” says Mayor Lester.
