Speed reductions are on the cards for some roads after the NZTA said they received more than sixty submissions from the public on the speed limit rules.
Some were from cyclists who want speed limits on urban roads slashed to as low as 30km/h, and rural roads lowered to 80km/h.
NZTA safety director Harry Wilson said that cuts to inner-city speed limits are more realistic than rural changes - depending on other submissions.
He believes that both safety and efficiency are key considerations.
"Speed is quite a critical factor in a number of deaths and serious injuries," Mr Wilson said.
"But more importantly it determines the outcome [of crashes]."
Wilson thinks that roads have different needs, but said that the NZTA are open to the idea.
