Jones was asked to listen to the standard briefing given to all passengers seated in an emergency exit row, but he refused and asked to be left alone.

He continued reading and was later taken off the flight by security staff.

Passengers cheered as Jones was escorted off the plane. The plane's captain apologised for the incident.

Jones' office is refusing to comment. Air New Zealand confirmed that CAA security had removed a man from Flight NZ421 this morning.

Singer-songwriter Lizzie Marvelly was on board and says it was a bit of a shock to see security.

"All of a sudden two Aviation Security officers boarded the plane and escorted a gentleman off, who looked remarkably like Bob Jones."

Lizzie Marvelly says a flight attendant confirmed for her later on that it was Sir Bob Jones.

The multi-millionaire property investor and newspaper columnist has a reputation for throwing rude gestures at what he calls the "nanny state".

He has drawn ire in the past for writing derisively about "Asians", women drivers, Maori, and protestors against sexual violence who were "implausible rape victims".
