More than a hundred survivors of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake will gather together this weekend to commemorate its anniversary.

The earthquake struck on February the third, killing 256 people.

A special event on Sunday involving local high schools, civil defence and councils will mark the country's deadliest natural disaster.

Napier's deputy mayor, Faye White says it's about allowing survivors to meet old friends again and share their memories.

"The survivors are now 84 to 102 those attending. There's 114 attending."

Ms White says the earthquake is something locals are always very mindful of.

"These people survived and got a story to tell and we actually bring them together to commemorate that event which was life changing."
