Southland scrub fire a warning for all

A Southland fire that ravaged through more than 100 hectares of scrub should serve as a warning.

Southern Rural Fire spokeswoman Sally Chesterfield said high winds spurred the fire on, and people should be mindful that it's these sorts of conditions that cause flare-ups.

"These kind of winds, they can happen to anyone, any where, any time. And even though you have had a fire it might have been a few days ago - it might have been a week ago, continue to check it because these things can happen to anyone."

At least 50 firefighters and seven helicopters battled the blaze north of Dipton yesterday.

Sally Chesterfield said they were able to get it contained before nightfall, but they will be checking for flare ups this morning, before they can begin dampening hot spots.

We're hoping that it will be contained well enough that it will stay where it is and we'll be dampening down hotspots and clearing up the fire."
