Police are investigating claims a prisoner was raped by his cellmate at a facility in South Auckland.
The Department of Corrections has also launched an inquiry into the allegation.
The inmate says he was beaten up on Thursday by seven men, and then raped all night by his cellmate.
A spokesman for Corrections Minister Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga says he has been told about the attack and is seeking more information.
The inmate's family say they spent hours trying to get information.
A meeting has now been set up between the family and prisoner for tomorrow.
Corrections' northern regional commissioner Jeanette Burns said staff acted immediately to support the prisoner after he disclosed what had happened.
She said he's been moved to the health unit so his well-being can be monitored.
