Social media fears for property developers

The threat of nimbyism could be putting property developers off making grand plans in Auckland.

Some property owners are scrapping or changing building plans that fit within the city's planning rules, because of the threat of a backlash on social media.

Earlier this year a couple in the West Auckland suburb of Titirangi sparked protests when they tried to fell a kauri tree on their property, despite independent commissioners approving their plans.

A Whangaparaoa property owner appears to have backtracked on plans to remove a Kauri hanging over his house, fearing a similar social media outcry.

Property Council chief executive Connal Townsend said the threat of last minute protests against approved projects could have a "chilling effect" on prospective developers.

"Once the plan is set you've got to give people a fair crack at actually following the rules and getting ahead and doing the project."

He thinks the public should have their say, but social media shouldn't override the legal process.

"There's a district plan, and if people want to raise issues that should be raised as part of setting the plan."
