SkyPath to be "iconic, revolutionary" for Auckland

Supporters of the Auckland SkyPath are rubbishing claims it will be a financial, functional and environmental failure.

The Northcote Residents' Association says it has withdrawn its Environment Court appeal against the project because it cannot afford to lose the case.

But it remains adamant the SkyPath, which is being underwritten by Auckland Council, won't be safe or profitable for its developer.

Lobby group Generation Zero has campaigned for the project, and its Auckland director Leroy Beckett says the association's position is more of the same.

"These groups have been opposing this project for years and years and years," he said.

"They've been fighting this without any basis in logic and they just seem to be continuing that."

Mr Beckett says the groups have been standing in the way of a project most politicians and Aucklanders want.

"We've been talking to councillors and candidates around the upcoming elections and all of them support SkyPath.

"It's gonna be an iconic, revolutionary project for Auckland," he said.

The Northcote Residents' Association continues to oppose the public-private partnership, which Auckland Council has agreed to underwrite.

The Northcote Point Heritage Preservation Society is still appealing the path's user numbers and opening hours.
