National Party leader Simon Bridges says Māori should feel confident enough in their culture to let it be shared and enjoyed by all.
His comments follow intense media debate over whether life coach Sally Anderson is entitled to her moko given she's Pākehā.
He says it's ridiculous and he thinks she has as much right as anyone to a moko.
Bridges says Māori culture and Māoridom is strong and vibrant, and should be secure in itself not to worry about things like this.
"I mean that's sort of like saying because I'm not Scottish I can't wear a kilt, I can wear a kilt and I don't think the Scottish would be saying that's a bad thing or that I'm somehow culturally appropriating them."
He says the whole situation's ridiculous.
"I think she's allowed that, I don't think it is disrespectful to anyone, I think we have sort of taken this cultural appropriation stuff far too far."
