UPDATED 12.34PM: A Sikh man who removed his turban to help save a child's life has been honoured in Auckland this morning.
Harman Singh is among those being recognised at the Counties Manukau Police awards.
He became famous worldwide as the 'Sikh samaritan', after coming to the aid of a six year old boy hit by a car in Takanini in May.
Singh removed his turban - which is strictly not allowed in his religion - and used it to cradle the boy's bleeding head.
Police and civilians are being recognised at the awards held at Manukau Institute of Technology.
Six people who helped save children from drowning at Mangere Bridge in 2012 are also receiving awards.
Allan Godfrey was also honoured for his bravery. Godfrey was on his way to fish with his 12-year-old son at Mangere Bridge, when he saw the Paasi family's dinghy capsize, and came to the rescue of the youngest boy.
He says both his son and daughter, who were with him today as he accepted the honour, are very proud of him.
Godfrey says he continues to re-live the traumatic experience, but says he'd do it all again to save the young boy.
