A wastewater main has burst in central Wellington, sending sewage into the sea.
The 300 millimetre main burst at the northern end of Victoria Street, near the Central Police Station, this morning.
It's prompted a warning from the council for both motorists and those in and on the water.
Council spokesman Richard MacLean said Victoria Street is down to one lane.
He's asking motorists to avoid the area for the next few hours until the break is fixed.
He said a limited amount of dilute sewage has also over-flown into the Frank Kitts Park lagoon on the waterfront.
