While the sun may be showing its face today...it may be rather short-lived.

MetService has issued a severe weather watch for parts of the North Island and the South Island this weekend.

Heavy falls are likely in many areas especially in the north and west of the North Island as well as Nelson and western Marlborough.

However the main rain band is expected to clear the country late Sunday morning - just in time for Christmas week.
