Seales' family won't appeal High Court decision

The family of Lecretia Seales has decided not to appeal the High Court decision against her right to legally end her life.

The Wellington lawyer died in June, shortly after hearing her argument had been rejected.

Her husband Matt Vickers said while they are not appealing, the findings in the judgment are firm enough that parliament is still obliged to look at the law.

Parliament has committed to an inquiry into voluntary euthanasia after Vickers and the Voluntary Euthanasia Society presented a petition in favour.

He contends Parliament has a moral and democratic responsibility to review the issue.

Vickers said his wife achieved a great deal with her case and won a huge amount of public support.

He believes that while an appeal might prove her right on a point of law, it is more important to now to achieve legislative outcomes for the benefit of all New Zealanders.

Through her High Court actions Seales had hoped to achieve an interpretation on the Crimes Act that would allow her doctor to legally assist her in dying or, failing that, an amendment to the law.
