The Ministry for Primary Industries are relocating six salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds.

The Ministry is proposing to move farms in the Pelorus Sound and Tory Channel because they no longer meet best practice environmental standards.

MPI's Luke Southorn said moving the farms will be very beneficial.

"We're look to move them to areas that are of higher water flow and also provide the opportunity for improved production and with that comes jobs and income to the local economy."

The public have been invited to have their say on the proposal.
